The Atlanta Street Food Festival Returns to Piedmont Park

For the fourth year, the Atlanta Street Food Festival will return to the Piedmont Park on Saturday, July 11, from noon to 10 p.m. The festival has announced that, once again, a portion of the event proceeds will support the Giving Kitchen, the culinary charity with the unique mission of providing crisis grants to members of Atlanta’s restaurant community facing unanticipated hardship.

Atlanta Street Food Festival offers event-goers the opportunity to enjoy a variety of Atlanta’s food trucks, local merchants and artisans, and live entertainment from some of the area’s performers. To provide street food diners with the complete festival experience, a diverse selection of craft beer, cocktails, wine and popular “liquor lemonade” will be available for purchase. More than 50 food trucks, including MIX’d UP, Nectar Food Truck, Ibiza Bites, Yumbii, Genki Sushi Food Truck and Viet-Nomie’s, will gather for the occasion.

In addition to street food cuisine, entertainment from a variety of local bands will include Nameless Band Atlanta, Gritz & Peanut Butter & Jelly, Bird City Revolutionaries, Wasted Potential Brass Band and Secondhand Swagger. The Atlanta Street Food Festival app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Once downloaded, smart phone users can view featured menus, peruse the entertainment schedule and festival map, and upload photos of their favorite food truck fare. Additionally, a street food “Survival Guide” will be offered to provide patrons with valuable tips and pointers to ensure a fantastic festival experience, including best times to show up, which lines are the fastest, and even what to wear.

Also new this year, festival-goers will be able to vote for their favorite food truck from noon to 6 p.m. by texting the name of their favorite food truck to 411247. The winner will be announced at 7 p.m.

NCR Corporation serves as title sponsor and MARTA presents Atlanta Street Food Festival this year, along with sponsors All Phase Home Services, Atlanta Eats, the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Hawks, eBlu, Foodie Fun, Georgia Aquarium, Green Mountain Gringo, Lethal Rhythm Entertainment, Nuloo, Power Home Remodeling Group, Renewal by Anderson, Sweetwater Brewing Company, UBER, Yelp, and Zombie Run Atlanta 5K.

Tickets are not required to enter the event, but patrons must purchase a wristband to buy food from the food trucks and to purchase alcohol. Wristbands are available for purchase for $6 until May 1 at, and diners will receive one “taste ticket” with each wristband purchased online in advance. Guests are encouraged to use MARTA public transportation to travel to and from the event.

‘Hired Guns’ Series to Bring Pacific Northwest Chefs to Gunshow

Gunshow, chef Kevin Gillespie’s Glenwood Park restaurant, is taking guests on a two-night culinary tour of the Pacific Northwest interpreted with Argentinean and European flavors. On Tuesday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 27, Gillespie welcomes Greg Denton and Gabrielle Quiñónez Denton, chefs and co-owners of the Portland, Oregon, restaurant Ox. The duo is known for inventive fare inspired by the wood-fired grilling tradition of Argentina and the culinary heritage of Spain, France and Italy.

Named to Food & Wine’s list of the Best New Chefs for 2014 and finalists for the James Beard Foundation’s 2015 Best Chef Northwest honor, the Dentons come to Gunshow as part of the “Hired Guns” series. These dining events feature guest chefs showcasing their signature flavors and personalities in Gunshow’s open kitchen, creating dishes to serve alongside the restaurant’s regularly featured items and sharing their own stories with restaurant guests.

“The ‘Hired Guns’ series gives us a chance to introduce Atlanta diners to some of the most talented chefs in the country,” says Gillespie. “I’ve been a fan of Greg and Gabrielle for years, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring to Gunshow.”

Greg and Gabrielle met while working at the Michelin-starred restaurant Terra in Napa Valley, California. Since opening Ox Restaurant in April of 2012, the Dentons have racked up the honors, including recognition as one of Bon Appetit’s Top 50 Best Restaurants of the Year, The Oregonian’s 2013 Restaurant of the Year, a James Beard Foundation 2013 Best New Restaurant in America semi-finalist, and’s 2012 Portland Restaurant of the Year. They are in the process of writing an Ox Restaurant cookbook scheduled for release in 2016.

“We look forward to sharing a little bit of the Pacific Northwest with Atlanta diners,” says Greg Denton. “We’re going to have fun collaborating with Kevin and serving up a taste of Portland.”

Future “Hired Guns” events include JJ Johnson of Harlem’s The Cecil, Aug. 11-12; Jean-Paul Bourgeois of New York City’s Blue Smoke, Sept. 29-30; and Colby and Megan Garrelts of Rye in Kansas City, Nov. 17-18.


Doug Turbush Will Open Third Restaurant in The Avenue East Cobb

Doug Turbush, a long time East Cobb resident and chef/owner of Seed Kitchen & Bar and Stem Wine Bar in Marietta, will open Drift in The Avenue East Cobb later in 2015. Described as a modern fish house and oyster bar, Drift will be an upscale casual addition to the emerging East Cobb dining scene. The opening is anticipated for late 2015.

“Drift is a chef-driven restaurant offering an approachable menu of creative, sustainable seafood preparations and techniques,” says Turbush. “The Avenue is an ideal location for a neighborhood gathering place, and we plan to deliver a dynamic dining destination and the high level of service our guests have come to expect from our restaurants.”

Drift’s menu of wild-caught and sustainable seafood available from American lakes, rivers, streams and ocean waters reflects a commitment to sustainability that Turbush and his team share, as well as their experience and travels. Guests will enjoy an array of seafood, locally sourced produce, wood-fired specialties, quality meats, house-made desserts, modern cocktails, craft beer and wine.

An oyster bar will offer a rotating selection of oysters and raw bar specialties. At the heart of the kitchen, a wood-burning grill will pair an age-old cooking method with modern technique. In addition to the main dining room, Drift offers a chef’s table dining experience, a full bar, a private dining area for groups and an expansive patio.

Turbush is again working with architecture firm ai3 to design the 5,260-square-foot space. Drift’s design draws inspiration from the feeling of being carried slowly by a current of water and will feature clean lines and an open, airy quality.

Chef de cuisine Brendan Keenan is working with Turbush on menu development, while general manager and sommelier Jason Raymond oversees operations and the creation of Drift’s wine program. Bar manager and mixologist Chris McNeill is designing the beverage program. Representing the restaurant team’s real estate transactions is Michael Mitcham of Mitcham & Associates.


STATS Upgrades Table Tap System in Time for Spring Sports Season

Already the birthplace of self-service beer in the United States, STATS is re-launching its table tap beer system provided by Table Tap LLC to feature the latest technology available. An interactive experience that allows diners to fill up their drinks and place a food order without waiting or leaving their seats will be offered.

“We are thrilled to offer our patrons the latest Table Tap advancements through our TableTender® system,” says Brian Bullock, managing partner of Legacy Restaurant Partners. “With this new technology, our guests will experience even shorter wait times and more entertainment options while our staff has more time to focus on customer service.”

The first self-serve beer system was installed at STATS in 2007, and the 12 taps were all electro-mechanical with basic screens to display the number of ounces being poured to beer drinkers. Now, STATS has an enhanced TableTender® “Pour Your Own Beer” system that includes the following upgrades for restaurant guests:

  • iPads with high-resolution screens and updated user interface at each table
  • Wi-Fi enabled for guests to look up videos and just about anything on the Web right from their table
  • The new ‘More’ button pulls up a selection of apps curated by STATS, such as Uber or Bleacher Report
