New Software May Help Managers Navigate Sticky Situations
By Daniel McCoy, MBA, SHRM-CP, VAW Certified

Conflict resolution is a critical aspect of managing any business. If there are people involved, inevitably there will be conflict. This is particularly true in the food service industry where the fast-paced environment often leads to disputes among staff and between staff and customers. Effective conflict resolution ensures smooth operations, maintains customer satisfaction, and helps businesses retain staff. Traditionally, resolving conflicts has relied on human managers’ interpersonal skills, but artificial intelligence (AI) is now emerging as a powerful tool to enhance and streamline conflict resolution processes, potentially making them more efficient and effective.
- Humanyze – Analyzes workplace interaction and behavior.
- Cogito – Analyzes voice conversations in real-time, providing emotional intelligence insights.
- Kensho – Analyzes large datasets and provides insight for decision making. Offers predictive analytics.
Conflict is a part of life, and rather than being a negative, it can lead to positive outcomes if handled appropriately. Conflicts in the food service industry can arise from very common scenarios, including the high-stress environment, customer expectations, communication breakdowns, limited resources, and cultural and language differences. Kitchens are hot, dining rooms are crowded, and tempers can flair. These conflicts can disrupt operations, lead to customer dissatisfaction, and create a hostile work environment. Left unresolved, these issues can affect staff morale, overall operational efficiency and even incite violence.

AI Applications in Conflict Resolution
How can AI help restaurant managers with these daily challenges? There are several new software brands on the market (see sidebar) that can make an impact in the following ways.
- Predictive Modeling and Early Warning Systems: AI can analyze data from various sources, such as customer feedback, employee performance metrics, and social media, to identify patterns and predict potential conflicts before they escalate. This proactive approach allows managers to address issues early, preventing them from becoming major disputes. For example, an AI system might notice a recurring scheduling complaint and prompt a manager to address it proactively with the employees, preventing a full-blown argument.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Sentiment Analysis: NLP tools can analyze email, chat or social media communication between staff and customers to understand sentiments and intentions behind messages. This helps in identifying misunderstandings and addressing them promptly. Sentiment analysis can also be used to gauge customer satisfaction and detect potential conflicts from reviews and feedback.
- Chatbots and Automated Decision-Making: Customer satisfaction is crucial to food service operators. AI-powered chatbots can handle routine customer complaints and inquiries that arise from websites or on-line reviews, freeing up human resources. These chatbots can provide immediate responses, offer solutions, and refer issues to human managers when necessary. Automated decision-making systems can also assist in resolving disputes by providing unbiased recommendations based on data analysis.
- AI Mediation Platforms: AI mediation platforms, such as TheMediator.AI, offer cost-effective and impartial mediation services. These platforms can objectively analyze disputes, for example a disagreement between front-of-house and back-of-house managers over the food cost budget. TheMediator is able to take in all relevant documentation, create summaries, allow for effective communication of both arguments, and guide parties towards mutually agreeable solutions. This reduces the need for in-person meetings and helps resolve conflicts efficiently, freeing up busy restaurant operators for other tasks.
Implementing AI in Conflict Resolution
To effectively implement AI in conflict resolution, food service businesses might consider the following strategies:
- Training and Education: Staff should be trained to use AI tools and understand their benefits. This includes training on how to interact with AI-powered chatbots and mediation platforms, as well as understanding the insights provided by predictive modeling and sentiment analysis.
- Clear Policies and Procedures: Establishing clear policies and procedures for conflict resolution is essential. AI tools can help restaurants clarify and reinforce their policies, such as their employee handbook for example, by providing consistent and unbiased recommendations on language and legality. AI can also assist restaurateurs with writing clear and enforceable policies, so that gray area is removed. Businesses should ensure that all staff members are aware of these policies and understand how AI can assist in resolving conflicts when they arise.
- Feedback Mechanisms: Implementing feedback mechanisms allows businesses to continuously improve their conflict resolution processes. AI can analyze feedback from staff and customers to identify areas for improvement and suggest changes to policies and procedures.
Challenges and Considerations
While AI offers significant benefits for conflict resolution, there are challenges and considerations to keep in mind:
- Privacy & Ethical Considerations: AI systems must be designed to respect privacy and confidentiality. Businesses should ensure that AI tools are used ethically, and that data is handled securely.
- Bias and Fairness: AI systems can sometimes exhibit biases based on the data they are trained on. It is important to regularly review and update AI algorithms to ensure fairness and avoid discrimination.
- Human Oversight: Despite the advantages of AI, human oversight is essential. Managers should monitor AI recommendations and intervene when necessary to ensure that conflicts are resolved effectively and fairly.
Enhancing conflict resolution with AI in the food service industry offers numerous benefits, including improved efficiency, proactive management, and unbiased mediation. By implementing AI tools such as predictive modeling, NLP, chatbots, and mediation platforms, businesses can address conflicts more effectively and create a harmonious work environment. However, it is crucial to consider ethical implications, ensure fairness, and maintain human oversight to achieve the best outcomes.
