Taco Mac announced the closure of its original location in Atlanta’s Virginia-Highlands neighborhood on May 12, after operating there since 1979. The closure comes as the company continues to focus on growth across the Southeast. Several weeks later, the company’s Midtown location on Peachtree St. also abruptly closed its doors.
“We are incredibly proud of what began in Virginia-Highlands 46 years ago. As we continue to evolve and grow, a part of our hearts will always remain on the corner of N. Highland and Virginia,” said Harold Martin, CEO of Taco Mac. Fresh Hospitality, led by Martin, bought the Taco Mac brand in 2018.
The original neighborhood location of Taco Mac gave birth to a brand that now includes 28 locations, including new locations in Macon and Conyers, Ga., and Pelham, Ala.
The closure reflects an evolution of Taco Mac’s long-term strategy. “This isn’t the end of the story — it’s a milestone in our journey,” Martin said. “We’re deeply grateful for our roots in the Virginia-Highlands neighborhood in Atlanta, and we’re more excited than ever for what’s ahead.” Other recent Taco Mac closures include the 2021 closure of the Lindbergh location in Atlanta, citing safety concerns, and the 2023 closure of the Decatur location on W. Ponce de Leon Ave.
Taco Mac will cede the Virginia-Highland space to Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint, the Virginia-based restaurant chain. Team members impacted by the closure have been offered positions at nearby Taco Mac restaurants. Guests are encouraged to visit other locations across the metro Atlanta area to enjoy the Taco Mac experience.
